House devided by Dutch/Belgian border - this cache leads you to the geographical oddity of Baarle-Nassau/Hertog. The town of Baarle-Nassau/Hertog lies in the Netherlands but is partly Belgian. It's partly made up of over 20 Belgian enclaves. To make things even more complicated, within the Belgian enclaves lie several Dutch enclaves. So walking through the town one constantly encounters and crosses the Dutch/Belgian border. The border is marked with special tiles and other markers. The house in this picture has the border running exactly through its front door! The house has 2 house numbers, one Belgian, and one Dutch.
The cache also brings you to several enclaves in the rural areas around the town. There's also a Dutch exclave just over the true border.
The Femis bank was closed in the early 1990s because of illegal transactions. On paper the bank wasn't a bank, but still money could be deposited anonymously, and without having to tell what the source was. The bank therefore was used mainly by criminal organizations. The border runs exactly through the building. In Belgium other regulations applied, so the word "Bank" was hung up on the Belgian side of the building.

Horses on Belgian territory photographed from the Netherlands!
The St. Bernardus chapel. While the chapel is on Belgian territory, and while not even being an enclave, it can only be reached via the Netherlands. The only Belgian road that leads to the chapel is running on private property.
The cache - the cache is hidden close to the smallest Belgian enclave in the Netherlands. It wasn't until 1995 that the piece of land became Belgian. Up until then it had been no mans's land. Pirate radio stations used the piece of land to broadcast from, as there were no regulations about licenses.

Monument in remembrance of the victims of WWII in the area. This is also the former center point of a German ammunition depot (Munitions Ausgabe Stelle - M.A.St.)which was situated here during the War. When they thought defeat came in to sight in 1944, the Germans blew up most of the M.A.St. Windows shattered as far as 10 kilometres away from the site! The cache leads you along various remains of the former ammunition depot, including bomb craters, vehicle parking places, and foxholes.

Monument - The cache is hidden at a place where during the great flood of 1953 the river Hollandsche IJssel had broken through the dyke. They decided to close this hole in the dyke by "plugging" it with a ship! It was a close call (dubbeltje op z'n kant) as much of the land lying behind the dyke was about to get flooded. On the gc.com page of this cache you can see a photo of the ship plugged in to the dyke. This monument commemorates this event taking place in the night of january 31st to February 1st, 1953.

Monument - In 1944 on their way back from a bombing run on the German town of Aachen, a Halifax LV905 aircraft of the British Royal Air Force was shot down over the Biesbosch by the Germans. The aircraft with the crew consisting of 7 men crashed at this site. It wasn't until 2005 that the aircraft was recovered, and the men got a proper burial. This monument, made of one of the propellers of the aircraft, commemorates the 7 people of the Halifax LV905. This is an impressive site.

The "Schrank" hut - This hut, similar to the ones used in the old days to sleep and live in by people who worked in the Biesbosch area to cut reed and willow branches, is now available to hikers to sleep and camp in. It's open to all. There's also a picnic table, a fire place ,and a water pump. It's a very peaceful and idyllic spot. It must be wonderful to wake here in the morning and hear nothing but the birds.

Something is glowing in the dark at the cache site. A cache in Schoonhoven, this time not by Dalamot, but again a very creative cache container. To good to give away any spoilers here. It seems that after geocaching in Schoonhoven, when it comes to cache container creativity, caching in other parts of the Netherlands can only be disappointing!

The Flying Dutchman - 17th century home of VOC Captain Willem van der Decken. One Eastern morning Van der Decken left the harbor of Terneuzen with his ship De Vliegende Hollander to sail to the East. At the Cape of Good Hope the ship was caught in very bad weather and the crew wanted to return to Cape Town to wait for better weather. But Captain Van der Decken was a stubborn man and swore to round the Cape no matter what. His ship was lost and Van der Decken never returned to Terneuzen. According to legend Van der Decken still sails the 7 seas with his ship De Vliegende Hollander and brings bad luck to every ship that he encounters. Van der Decken became the famous legend of the Flying Dutchman.

Waypoint 1 - John S. Thompson Bridge - Memorial for US Lieutanent John S. Thompson of the E-company of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. The bridge in the background at Grave is named after Lieutanent Thompson.
This multi-cache tour retraces the Allied WWII operation "Market Garden" which main goal was to secure the bridges across the rivers in Holland so that the Allied forces could advance northwards and into the lowlands of Germany. If all carried out as planned, this operation should have ended the war by Christmas 1944. Unfortunately the operation didn't have the expected outcome, as the bridge at Arnhem proved to be a "bridge too far".
Contrary to the remainder of the regiment, Lieutanent Thompson and his company landed close to their objective, the bridge over the river Maas at Grave, and managed to secure the bridge. Without any losses Thompson and his company had accomplished a mission that was assigned to an entire regiment!
The cache at WP1 - At the beginning of the tour you get a map of the area which is completed with a matching transparency to be taken from the final cache showing the operation Market Garden moves.

Fallen trees - The cache is hidden in a forest area that was largely destroyed in November 1972 during one of the worst storms that ever hit the Netherlands. Within a couple of hours the November storm had destroyed large parts of our forests in the provinces Drenthe and Overijssel. Trees were blown down, broken or splintered.
The fallen trees in this area aren't dead, and it's really interesting to see how a new sort of forest has developed here.

Bokkenollen Festival in Griendtsveen - Traditionally every first Monday in October in the Netherlands, the year's new Bavaria bokbeer (the famous Dutch autumn beer) is presented. This inspires the villagers of Griendtsveen the Saturday after to hold the annual Bokkenollen Autumn Festival. Over an "assault course" of approximately 1.5 kilometers seventeen difficult obstacles have to be taken, all the way holding a tray with four glasses filled with bokbeer on it. Eventually the team (consisiting of two runners) with the best time and the heighest weight of bokbeer still left in the glasses wins. Obstacles consist of a mudditch, an amfibious bath tub run, a bob track, a suspense bridge etc. etc. This all leads to hillarious situations.
The Peeldorp cache is hidden in the village of Griendtsveen (a little village on the edge of peatland area De Peel). We didn't know of the Bokkenollen Festival, but we definitely couldn't have chosen a better day to do this cache!

Kraterbos (Crater Forest) - In December 1965 the little village of 't Haantje was woken up by a loud explosion. At a nearby drilling site of the Dutch Oil Company a severe blow-out had occured. At the site a crater with a diameter of 30 meters had formed and a huge fountain of water, mud and gas was blown into the air with an incredible noise. The 48 meter high oil derrick had completely disappeared into the depth of the earth together with some trailers!! Luckily the site had been evacuated in time.
It took three months to get the blow-out under control. The site had been formed into a moon landscape! Since 1966, the state forestry service let nature take over the place with a surprising result. The site has turned into a beautiful nature area with rare flower species.
The little "crater lake" - This is not the actual place of the blow out. The lake is the remainder of the excavation for sand needed for restoration and egalisation of the area.
This is where it all happened - Imagine a 48 meter high oil derrick disappearing into the depth of the earth here!

Historical Hoorn with statue of Jan Pieterszoon Coen - This cache leads you through the lovely village of Hoorn, and takes you along on the adventures of the "Ship's boys of Bontekoe". In 1618, three young boys called Hajo, Rolf and Padde sailed with the VOC ship "Nieuwe Hoorn" from the Netherlands to the East. The ship was in command of captain Willem IJsbrantszoon Bontekoe from Hoorn. On the way the ship gets on fire, the load of gunpowder explodes, and the ship sinks. A couple of men, including Hajo, Rolf, and Padde manage to reach Sumatra. There the three boys lost contact with the other men. They built a raft and managed to reach Java with it. There they found the crew of their ship, including captain Bontekoe. After the difficult journey they all made it to Batavia, where governer-general of the VOC, Jan Pieterszoon Coen, also from Hoorn, welcomes them.

There are 54 of such dolmens left in the Netherlands of which 52 in Drenthe. They are the remains of the ancient graves of a farming people that lived in this part of the Netherlands 5000 years ago. People used to believe that the dolmens were built by giants ('huynen'). How exactly the dolmens were built still remains a mystery. Visiting those magical places one can only stand in awe and wonder how, without the help of modern day technology, people 5000 years ago could have accomplished this. One starts to believe in giants indeed. And that's not the only thing to be amazed by; these giant boulders were transported to the Netherlands by ice age glaciers, as if they were little pebbles!

October 18, 2003

Schokland is a former island which after the impoldering of the Noordoostpolder area in 1942 is now completely surrounded by land. Schokland however still is a distinctive rise in the flat landscape and remains as an island on dry land. On the left of the picture, part of the eastern Schokland coastline can be seen with one of the old island settlements called Middelbuurt.

Ruins of the church of Ens on the southern point of the island
Lighthouse, what's left of it
Foghorn House- in the old days the harbour of Schokland provided a safe place for the ships on the Zuiderzee during storm or heavy ice. To safely pilot in the ships in 1921 a foghorn installation was set up on the island at the harbour in Oud Emmeloord. It was housed in the little building on this photo.
